A Triennial is Born And It’s Younger Than Jesus

Alyssa Bianca-Pavley

04.16.09

Yes there is a new ‘-ennial’ out there.  A triennial – at the New Museum in New York’s (re)burgeoning bowery art scene. On inception it’s being called The Generational: Younger Than Jesus, because everyone in the show is under 33.  And we wonder if they are going to keep the same title ever year? ‘Younger than Jesus’ that is? I mean what if all the believers out there are right and Jesus happens to come back in the years in between? Guess the Priory of Sion is not in on this one.  Alyssa Bianca-Pavley, quite younger than Jesus herself, gives us the run down in brief.

Busdriver: The Avatar of ‘Less Yeses, More No’s’ in the Era of ‘Yes, We Can’

Ben Bush

04.10.09

If Obama’s historic ascendancy and the recent month long bull run has extended November’s sense of euphoria of ‘yes we did’ and that all is well again in the world, just remember there are still some Cassandras out there, dissenters like Los Angeles based hip hop artist Regan Farquhar, a.k.a. Busdriver.  But don’t pigeonhole him because as he put it himself, “I’m against everything.” Controversial true, but with lyrics belted so lightning fast, he’s tagging all the bases and then some. Busdriver is interviewed and profiled here by Ben Bush.

The Last Warlock: A Brief History of Clark Ashton Smith and The Golden Age of Weird Fiction

Adam Ganderson

04.05.09

Clark Ashton Smith, born and lived in Auburn, California, an old mining town founded at the height of the gold rush era. It is known as the "Endurance Capital of the World" and touts itself as a place where old traditions live on, where the good parts of living in a small town endure and time moves just a bit slower. A strange setting for one of the giants of Weird Fiction. Adam Ganderson offers a retrospective look at Clark Ashton Smith—his life in a small town, and his influences on science fiction, fantasy, and popular culture.

Talk Show 23: with Jenna Blum, Julia Glass, Nellie Hermann and Matthew Pearl

Jaime Clarke

04.04.09

In Talk Show 23, that magical number, host Jaime Clarke gives authors Jenna Blum, Julia Glass, Nellie Hermann and Matthew Pearl a forum to bitch a little about something that they think is overrated currently, be it oh…what’s the big buzz these days? Twittering?  Or how about good old fashioned Facebook? or maybe it’s the still hottest Eastern fitness trend (hmm what could that be?) that makes a certain writer’s skin crawl. And what about text messaging? Isn’t that some rotten thing we’ve all gotten snookered into? Then there’s iThis and iThat… Answers, complaints and suggestions are all filed here.  Art by Danny Jock.
