A few years back a friend and I spent a month tooling around Argentina, from Buenos Aires out to the pampas, the rain forest, the desert, western vinyards and back. The radio introduced us to a new brand of hardcore Cumbia that was ubiquitous throughout the land; it trickled down from the north, but surely eclipsed not only the native old Tango, but most Western pop reproductions too. Yeah outlaw Cumbia and its throbbing rhythms were/are the new law of the land. At Coachella last week we found perhaps the current best of these groups is (ha) named after a favorite Lacanian theorist, Slavoj Zizek. Wish I could follow a few more of Zizek Club’s lines between that bombast beat.
