Music: Big Star in the Big Apple

Michael Louie

Paul Westerberg never travelled far without a little Big Star and neither should you. This band made records in the 1970s that would play seamlessly in the best of indie rock of the last 20 years. It’s a great honor to be able to see Big Star these days; they’ve been such an influence and invented such pervasive themes that usually go unrecognized by the rock media, though the most curmudgeonly of them always give their respect. Full lineup, without Chris Bell of course. If you can score some of those Alex Chilton records with William Eggleston’s photos on the cover, I want to buy them. With Kurt Vile and the Violators, and Tara Angel.––ML
