My own position on copyright gets muddier and muddier but this is a compelling and visually enticing copyleft documentary starring the usual suspects of Girl Talk, Lawrence Lessig and Negativland; a vibrant updating of Craig Baldwin’s 1995 film Sonic Outlaws. To me, RiP’s greatest strength is that, while it focuses on the issues of sampling and downloading, it also addresses Brazil’s humanitarian bootlegging of HIV medication and the role of intellectual property in the shaping of Clinton era trade policy that relocated manufacturing jobs overseas.
