Dotty Attie’s show at PPOW is a compelling installation, exploring gender ambiguity and the way words can completely change an image. Her series of paintings form sequences that almost feel like film stills, anchored with inter-titles between each image. The repetition of the phrases “Keep That Up Her Mother Said” and “Who Knows What You Could Be Come” unite each series, as well as a picture of a horrified mother at the start of the sequence. The images are humorous, touching and occasionally depressing, all rendered charmingly in Attie’s photo realistic style. This show will open on October 29th, with a reception for the artist from 6-8 PM. NYC. –ABP
